Say what you will about Chris Brown. But don’t call his recent success a comeback.
The 22-year old R&B star has maintained great support from a loyal crew of fans since that fateful episode over two years ago. And with his album, “F.A.M.E.,” debuting in the top spot on the Billboard Top 200 chart earlier this year, spawning three number one singles and netting him six BET Award nominations, it would seem that he’s back to at least semi-mainstream acceptance. Not that he ever doubted it would happen.
“I don’t really think it’s a comeback album. I feel like it’s an album of triumph, like an underdog type of album,” Brown tells The Source magazine in its new cover story. “It’s more of me showing and proving everybody wrong. I don’t think I ever went anywhere. It’s not like I fell off the face of the earth.”
Recently, the singer and Rihanna seemed to be moving toward some small reconciliation; she moved to her her restraining order against him loosened so that he could appear at award shows, and perhaps even more tellingly, began following him on Twitter.
Brown is seemingly humble about his recaptured success. Brown seems to understand that his actions have consequences, and is looking to positively influence his fans.
“What I like most about being Chris Brown is being able to influence the world with my music and smile, being able to
inspire the world, fans singing your music, seeing people dressed like you but at the same time them wanting to be
themselves, be individuals,” he tells the magazine. “I recognize my music touches people and everything I do negative or positive affects people all over the world. So that’s definitely a blessing and a curse.”
He’s very adamant about that blessing and curse part; as someone who has experienced the highs and lows of his personal life from underneath the magnifying glass that is the public eye, the lack of freedom does trouble him sometimes.
SWV jumps on the remix to Chris Brown’s F.A.M.E. single “She Ain’t You,” which originally sampled their hit “Right Here,” as well as Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature.” The R&B trio sound as sweet as they did on the ’90s jam, dueting with Breezy, whose original vocals remain in tact.
Chris Brown’s bow tie makes a return to the spotlight on the cover of the June/July Issue of the Source. In his first magazine interview this year, penned by Aliyah King, he is asked “What is the hardest part about being Chris Brown”?
The hardest thing about Chris Brown is understanding that you’re “Chris Brown”. I just noticed the value of my brand, and who I am as a person now.
Chris Brown and Jill Scott join Alicia Keys as performers for this year’s BET AWARDS ’11. Brown, whose “F.A.M.E.” album is #3 on the R&B Billboard charts, leads the nominations race with nods in six categories. His top nominations include “Best Male R&B Artist,” “Video of the Year,” and “Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice” for his collaboration with Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne on “Look at Me Now.”
Joe Jonas’ first solo single, titled “See No More” and co-written by Chris Brown, debuted worldwide today (June 3) via Chicago radio station B96 (96.3 FM)’s morning show.
“See No More” finds Joe Jonas steering his solo career more toward urban-pop, hip-hop and electronica than his pop-rock past hits with the Jonas Brothers — possibly influenced by Chris Brown, who co-wrote the track alongside Jonas and producer Brian Kennedy. Kennedy, who’s worked with Rihanna (“Disturbia”), Ciara, Brandy and Brown, helms the production on “See No More,” which nicely highlights Jonas’ falsetto register.
The JoBro sings on the vulnerable break-up track’s chorus: “I don’t want to wait for you / I don’t want to wake up thinking, hoping you’ll get it right this time / Cause you know that you so cold / I don’t want to see no more.”
Jonas’ first solo single will hit iTunes June 13, with his full solo record arriving Sept. 6. In addition to Brian Kennedy, producers on the album include Rob Knox and Danja.
