Chris Brown and Rihanna , who added star power to last year’s Kids’ Choice Awards, were conspicuously absent at the annual event on Saturday.

Brown, who was nominated for favorite male singer and favorite song for “Kiss Kiss,” withdrew his name from Kids’ Choice contention after he was arrested Feb. 8 for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Rihanna , a fellow Kids’ Choice nominee for favorite female singer and favorite song for “Don’t Stop the Music,” was also a no-show.

“For them not to be here is very sad. I was looking forward to seeing them here,” rapper Soulja Boy , who is a friend of the pop stars, said from the orange carpet.

“Right now, it’s a sad situation. And it’s very touchy. I’m just …. it just shocked me when it happened,” he added.

Soulja Boy said he’s spoken with Brown over the phone and that the 19-year-old R&B singer is “doing OK.”

“Yeah, right now, it’s a delicate time,” he added. “You know, the court date is coming up. I hope that they both get through it in a positive way.”

Brown, who has been charged by Los Angeles prosecutors with felony assault and making criminal threats, is scheduled to be arraigned April 6.

In trouble with the law for his alleged beating of Rihanna, Chris Brown has really put a lid on it — literally. The under-siege singer bought 10 hats from the store “Lids” on Saturday but not before a RadarOnline.com fan snapped multiple photos.

Surrounded by four big bodyguards and shopping in the MacArthur Mall in downtown Norfolk, Va., Chris took time to sign an autograph for a young boy who approached him.

He shopped in several of the mall’s stores but spent the most time in “Lids” buying mostly dark-colored hats. He drew a crowd of spectators but remained cool, leaving in his blue Lamborghini.

The Status Conference hearing for today Mar 23, in the People v Chris Brown case has been canceled.

The arraignment remains set for April 6 in Department 123 of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

Chris is required to attend.

UPDATE: The reason the Chris Brown hearing was continued is very simple, D.A. spokesperson, Sandi Gibbons tells RadarOnline.com, “The court could not do it that day and said it needed to be rescheduled. Up to defense to reschedule. No word on whether it has been. That’s all we know.”

In an interview with People.com, Tyrese Gibson spoke out in support of his friend Chris Brown, as well as Rihanna.

“Although he appears to be really strong through all of this, it’s really taking a toll on his spirit,” Gibson reportedly told the site on Sunday at the 2009 Ball Up Street Ball Tour in Los Angeles. “People like me and Puff [Diddy], we’re just trying to show him love and keep his spirits up while he’s going through all of the heat, and there are a lot people doing the same for Rihanna.”

Since news broke in February of the alleged altercation between Brown and Rihanna, the pair reportedly reunited — staying at Diddy’s Miami home — but are now reportedly taking a break. Yet conversation around the incident has continued to rage, and was even the subject of a special episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” earlier this month and a disturbing public service announcement from the teen organization DoSomething.org.

Gibson also pointed out that the two are still quite young, which makes the situation even more difficult. “And a lot of people forget that he’s 19, she’s only 21.

“It’s really hard for him to focus right now on his music, even though he really wants to,” Gibson continued. “At the end of the day, I’m not trying to justify it because wrong is wrong, but unfortunately, us as entertainers, we have to grow up onstage with a lot of people looking at us.”

American Idol Jordin Sparks singing Saturday in Primm — was on track to work with singer Chris Brown again, but she has had second thoughts after Brown was accused of beating his girlfriend-pop star Rihanna.

Sparks, 19, worked with Brown on her No. 3 hit of last year, “No Air.”

“I wanted to work with him on this new album, but I’m not very sure anymore. I don’t think that would be a smart move right now,” she told me. “I had actually gotten a song pitched — I think two weeks before the Grammys — that had him on it. But we’ll see what happens.”

I then asked Sparks in our phone interview: Does she agree with Oprah that once a man beats a woman, he’ll beat her again? Sparks’ publicist broke into the call to stop Sparks from answering.

While talking to the press about this April’s action adventure “Fast & Furious,” a movie that will kick off the summer blockbuster season a tad earlier this year, Paul Walker chimed about the co-star of another of his upcoming films, Chris Brown.

Walker was discussing “Bone Deep,” which he describes the first true “Italian Job,” when he brought up Brown’s situation.

“Chris Brown is a good kid. That stuff going around pisses me off,” Walker volunteered.

When a reporter followed up and asked what he thought about his co-star’s current legal situation, Walker appeared to have a lot of sympathy for Brown.

“It sucks bro. Y’know, everyone screws up. People do dumb stuff,” Walker says. “And I’m not saying I don’t sympathize with her, I mean, what went down, went down, but he’s a really good kid. And he screwed up. That’s it. Top of the world man. He’s got a lot going for him. What is he, 20 now? He was 19 when we were working. He’s dealing with a lot.”

Walker continues, “He’s got a really sweet spirit. I know he’s gonna be fine and he’s gonna make it through it and he’s gonna be good. I just hope that doesn’t mess him up. I want him to be the way he was at the end of it.”

The 35-year-old actor was then asked if the press have exacerbated the situation.

Walker replies, “Yeah, I mean if you were to ask her, what do you think she would say? Did she forgive him? Appears like it. She loves him. She knows his situation. She knows his story. I think she’s sticking around. I’m sure he’s plenty sorry.”

When reminded that public opinion is certainly against Brown, Walker answers, “Well, I’m not.”

New York rapper/ “America’s Best Dance Crew” judge Lil Mama, who collaborated with Chris Brown on her song “Shawty Get Loose,” spoke with MTV News this week about the singer’s alleged altercation with Rihanna.

“I haven’t spoken to Chris Brown in a while,” she said. “Was I surprised [about what happened]? [I was] very surprised to hear how people went about speaking on what happened.”

She said she was most confounded by the way people were commenting on the incident before details — which still have not been fully revealed — had emerged. “[I was] very surprised because there were allegations of Chris Brown and Rihanna having a fight and everyone just went crazy — the media, his fans, her fans. I mean, everybody just lost their minds,” she said. “Nobody knows what happens still to this day, but everybody’s talking. I don’t understand that.”

Despite Brown’s ongoing legal troubles and the backlash against him in the wake of the incident, Lil Mama said she would work with him again.

“I would definitely record a song or work with Chris Brown at this very moment, I would. That’s me.”

She added that she still “respects [him] as an artist and I do not know what he’s done in his personal life. I’ve heard allegations. I’ve seen pictures that might be false, that might be true.

“I have not heard from Rihanna,” she continued. “I see her in the media, taking pictures, going to events and living her life as she does normally, so I’m still confused. I don’t know what’s going on.”

Lil Mama did have a message for the pair. “I wish them both the best of luck. I wish them both all of the success in the world, which they deserve,” she said. “As far as the way I feel about it, it’s very confusing.”

There is no duet by Rihanna and Chris Brown despite previous reports that the pair had recorded a song together, a label source tells PEOPLE exclusively.

“Contrary to published reports, Chris Brown and Rihanna did not record a duet after the incident,” says the source, alluding to Brown’s alleged assault of his girlfriend last month.

Conflicting reports about a duet may have arisen because of a standard practice used during the development of new material. Last year, Brown and producer Polow da Don did write a song together, says the source.

Then, the source continues, “around August or September of 2008, Chris and Rihanna’s vocals were recorded as the reference vocals for this demo only. [But] the song was never conceived or intended to be a duet between them, and was later recorded by other artists.”

Reference vocals are created to give an understanding of how the writer intends a song to be sung on demo tracks sent out to other artists before the final recording process.

Turns out, the song was called “Bad Girl” – with lyrics focused on a women who overspends on designer goods – and was recorded by the Pussycat Dolls for the Confessions of a Shopaholic soundtrack. But the reference vocals for the song made by Rihanna also leaked to the Internet in January.

Adds the source: “Nothing has been recorded by Chris and Rihanna together since February.”

A spokesperson for producer Polow Da Don has confirmed that Chris Brown and Rihanna have recorded a duet. According to CNN, the unnamed song was tracked with Don just days after Brown, 19, was charged with two felonies over his alleged February 8 altercation with girlfriend Rihanna, 21.

Don’s publicist said the singers — who reportedly reunited at a home owned by Diddy in Miami two weeks ago — completed the song earlier this week, though no other details were available on the track. A spokesperson for Don did not return requests for comment on the song, and spokespeople for Brown and Rihanna have declined to comment about the sessions.

“My heart goes out to both Chris and Rihanna for what has happened in the past,” Polow said in a statement. “They are both great artists to work with, and I wish them well.”

Brown was charged with assault and making criminal threats on March 5 and is due back in court on April 6 for his arraignment in the case.

On Wednesday, Us Magazine reported additional details on the song, quoting an unnamed source describing it as having a theme “about being stronger and growing stronger in a relationship. … The song was originally created for Rihanna before the fight. However, it wasn’t initially slated for Chris to be on the song.”

The source added: “The funny thing is, the song expresses the emotions that both Chris and Rihanna are feeling at this moment — facing challenges and overcoming the ups and downs of a relationship in which you become stronger.” The singers were described as being “very playful” in the studio during the session.

A month before the alleged incident, MTV News reported that the couple, who have been very private about their yearlong relationship, had actually already worked on their first original track together. The song, “Bad Girl,” which leaked in January, was recorded for the soundtrack to “Confessions of a Shopaholic” and was produced by Polow but ultimately didn’t make the final cut for the album.

Chris Brown is happy with his management team the way it is, the singer’s mother, who is also his co-manager, says in a statement Thursday.

“Reports that Chris is looking to replace his team, including Mark Geragos, Tina Davis and Mike Sitrick, are false,” says the statement from Joyce Hawkins. “There are only two people who could make a change at that level on Chris’ behalf: his business attorney Kenny Meiselas and me – and neither of us were the source of this information.

“To the contrary, Kenny told the media outlet that broke this item, that the information they had was false. So there is no room for doubt or misunderstanding, let me state unequivocally, that no change is planned or being made with respect to Mark Geragos, Tina Davis or Mike Sitrick. We are very pleased with the work they are doing.”

Since the altercation between Brown, 19, and his girlfriend Rihanna, 21, last month, Brown has been spotted going to recording studios in California and Florida, plugging away on his third album, due out later this year.

He and Rihanna, most recently seen together in Miami, are working on their relationship, according to sources.

“Rihanna and Chris have been together almost constantly since leaving Miami,” says a source.
