LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Chewing gum maker Wrigley said on Thursday it had ended a commercial deal with R&B star Chris Brown, following his guilty plea on charges of assaulting former girlfriend and pop star Rihanna.
Brown had been a spokesman for Doublemint gum and his hit song “Forever” was part of Wrigley’s advertising campaign.
Following Brown’s February arrest on suspicion of attacking Rihanna in Los Angeles on the eve of the Grammy Awards, Wrigley said it was “concerned” by the allegations against him.
Maintaining that Brown, 20, deserved due legal process, Wrigley said at the time it was suspending its commercial featuring the singer until the matter was “resolved.”
But with Brown pleading guilty in June to punching Rihanna until she was bloodied and bruised, Wrigley said on Thursday it had “ended” its deal with the singer.
Brown, whose hit songs include “Run It” and “Kiss Kiss,” agreed in his plea to serve five years probation and perform 180 days of community service in his home state of Virginia.
Wrigley’s disclosure came a day after a judge delayed a sentencing hearing for Brown to make sure his punishment included physical labor such as road cleanup.

Singer Chris Brown attends a sentencing where he is sentenced to five years probation at the Superior Court of Los Angeles County on August 5, 2009 in Los Angeles.
The judge just delayed Chris Brown’s formal sentencing until August 27th at 2 PM PT. The judge said she wants Brown to perform Caltrans type work — hard labor — for his community service and the type of service hasn’t been arranged yet. So she’s deferred the sentence until later this month.
The judge wants to know what Brown will be doing for his community service — 90% of the community service is accounted for but the remaining 10% needs to be locked down. Rihanna’s lawyer, Donald Etra, says Brown has not violated the stay away order. Brown pled guilty to felony assault last month.

Lil Wayne fans got a big surprise when the America’s Most Wanted tour rolled into the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Virginia Beach, Virginia, two nights after Drake was forced to leave the tour after seriously re-injuring his knee. That surprise was a guest appearance from Chris Brown.
In his first onstage appearance singer Chris Brown jumped onstage near the end of headliner Lil Wayne’s set. Brown, who is from Virginia, helped out by lending his voice to Drake’s “Every Girl,” and paid tribute to Michael Jackson by as “Billie Jean” played in the background at the end of the night’s show. Wayne asked the crowd to make noise for “the new Michael.”
When asked by MTV News for a comment about the performance, Weezy responded simply via e-mail through a rep: “U kno I had to show him sum luv.”
